Tutor In-Service Training

Tutors who are trained by Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry agree to participate in some kind of in-service training at least once a year. Here are up-coming in-service events:

Focus on Fluency
When: Tuesday, November 29, 2011; 1:00-2:30 p.m. Beaufort Learning Center, 1403 Prince Street, downtown Beaufort
Presenter: Cindi Riley, Assistant Executive Director, LVL
Audience: Tutors and paid staff, ESOL and Adult Basic Education

Make reading happen for your students by helping them improve their reading fluency. Learn how to help adult learners read more accurately, more quickly, and with expression! This workshop provides methods and tips you can use with ESOL and Basic Literacy students.

Online Tutor In-Service Activities

While we offer face-to-face inservice activities at all three of our literacy centers throughout the year, sometimes tutors can't attend these sessions for a myraid of reasons. We are offering online in-service trainings so that all of our tutors can have an opportunity to participate and hone their tutoring skills.

Literacy Volunteers offers the option of initial tutor training through completing selected courses offered at the online ProLIteracy Educational Network site. There are also a number of additional courses that tutors can complete to fulfill their in-service requirement. Here is a list of the courses that you can complete for in-service:

  • A Way With Words: Strategies for Strengthening Adult Learners' Vocabularies
  • Before, During and After--A Reading Comprehension Technique
  • Building Comprehension: Strategies for Adolescent and Adult Readers
  • Citizenship: The Civics Test
  • Citizenship: The Interview
  • Citizenship: The Literacy Test
  • Developing Reading Fluency
  • Graphic Organizers: Tools for Instructors and Students
  • Making Math Manageable
  • Unleashing Potential through Multi-Intelligent Literacy Instruction.

NOTE:

If you attended LVL training in live sessions with a trainer (as opposed to online training), then you can also choose from the list of ProLiteracy Educational Network courses on the New Tutor Training Online page. Any of these courses would be a good refresher of the skills that you learned in training. Click here to go the New Tutor Training Online page.

When You Have Finished an In-Service Course

Please let your program manager know when you have completed an in-service course by emailing her.

You can also print a certificate when you finish a Thinkfinity course. Please bring a copy of the certificate to your Literacy Center and your program manager can put it in your file.
