New Tutor Training Online

Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry is now offering online tutor training. LVL will continue to offer full face-to-face training several times a year and in several locations. But we recognize that not everyone can make the scheduled trainings and this option will allow more tutors to be trained to meet the growing demand.

To get started, please contact the nearest Learning Center and schedule an appointment with a program manager.

  • In Bluffton, call 815-6616 and talk to Jackie Bauner
  • On Hilton Head Island, call 681-6655 and talk to Sharon Black
  • In Beaufort, call 525-6658 and talk to Cindi Riley.

These staff members can provide you with orientation materials and a copy of the textbook, Tutor or I Speak English, depending on your choice of what kind of students you want to work with: Basic Literacy (reading and writing) or English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). There is a $40 tutor registration fee, but scholarships are available.

Once you have been oriented, you may start your online training. Here is the link to the Verizon Literacy Campus: http://literacynetwork.verizon.org/TLN/courses. You will see a list of courses. These are the ones that are recommended for basic literacy (reading and writing) tutor training:

  • Orientation to Volunteering in Literacy
  • Working with Adult Literacy Learners
  • Principles of Adult Learning
  • Understanding the Reading Process
  • The Language Experience Approach
  • Phonemic Awareness Instruction for Adult Literacy Learners
  • Writing Without Fear

If you want to work with students who are learning to speak English (ESOL or EL), then complete these courses:

  • Orientation to Volunteering in Literacy
  • Working with English Language Learners
  • Principles of Adult Learning
  • Culture and English Language Learners
  • Volunteering in English Language Learner Literacy Classes
  • Working with English Language Learners
  • Using a Problem Posing Approach for Authentic Language Learning
  • Using the Newspaper in Adult Literacy and ESL instruction
  • The Language Experience Approach

Once you have completed these courses, contact your program manager about scheduling a session on goal-setting and lesson planning. This will complete your training and you should be ready to tutor adults in basic literacy or English for speakers of other languages.
