In-Service Modules
Using the Newspaper with Your Students
This module
contains information and resources for both tutors and literacy
program managers. Tutors can use the tips and teaching materials
to guide their students to use a wonderful, up-to-date and
cheap resource--the daily newspaper. Literacy program managers
can download resources here to lead a tutor in-service session
on the newspaper.
Tutor
Resources
While
many of our students will be very familiar with using a newspaper,
some will not. It's best not to assume anything. Click
here to read (and print) tips for using the
newspaper in a learning environment. This article was originally
written for K-12 students, but is relevant to adult students,
also.
Click
here to read (and print) ideas for use in tutoring
sessions and classrooms. Some are suitable for one-on-one
sessions; some are better in group settings.
There
are a number of free online newspapers available that are
suitable for adult literacy and ESOL students. Click
here to view links and descriptions of the
newspaper sites.
LVL
tutors: After reading the above resources, select a newspaper
activity to use with your student(s). Please click
here and write about which activity you have
chosen and why. Then click "Send" to send the message
to Literacy Volunteers. A staff member will read your response
and contact you. After you try the activity in your lesson,
please let us know how it went. Email us at criley@lowcountryliteracy.org.
We may want to share your successes and ideas here to encourage
other tutors. Completing this module fulfills Literacy Volunteer's
requirement for annual tutor re-certification. Thanks for
participating.

Literacy
Volunteers of the Lowcountry has presented "Using the
Newspaper with Your Students" as an in-person session
for tutors. You will need the files found above under Tutor
Resources. You will also need to click
here to download a teaching plan for that session.
Click
here to download the Activity Strips that are
called for in the plan. You will also need a copy of Pull--Project
for Unique Learners in Literacy, available from New
Readers Press. This is a great resource for
adult literacy programs in general and contains several good
activities that feature the newspaper.
Please
feel free to comment on the module and offer suggestions.
