LVL Students Learn About Fire Safety!

LVL student Leticia learns to use a fire extinguisher.

Students wait their turn to learn!

Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry strives to teach adults reading, writing and English-speaking skills in the context of everyday life. Here is a great example of how we do this!

On Tuesday, November 8, 2011, Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry’s Hilton Head Learning Center classes learned about fire protection and rescue. Students, tutors and staff were able to use a fire extinguisher outside, many for the first time. Participants learned about A B and C fires – material fires, grease fires, and electrical fires and how to put them out or when to get out and not try to put them out.

Cinda Seaman, public education officer of the Hilton Head Island fire and rescue unit led the session and first presented information about different kinds of fires and what causes fires in the home. Then everyone went out and practiced pulling the pin, aiming, and extinguishing a fire. The extinguishers were filled with water so people could take their time and really practice safety first with the extinguisher. Tutors Diane Bass, Elizabeth Toll, and Elaine Letizia’s classes participated in the lesson.

LVL student Kesinee Kerdsinchai enjoyed her practice time!

LVL staff and tutors are also life-long learners! HHLC Program Assistant Corina Altamirano took her turn, as did tutor Elaine Letizia, below.
