Above is Birgit Koellner-Gozlan, Marriott Vacation Club General Manager and tutor, student Soledad Moreira, and MVC tutor Jaime Batista. The MVC members of the diversity council trained with Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry to become ESL tutors in order to teach their employees better English for the workplace.

Wednesday, March 17th Marriott Vacation Club held a graduation celebration for 25 employees who completed the Diversity Council’s ESOL, English Speakers of Other Languages, English classes. The housekeeping, landscape, and engineering employees signed up for classes in November, were pre-tested at the Barony on November 2nd, the Grande Ocean on November 4th, and at the Welcome Center on the 6th. Classes began November 30th and finished March 17th. The classes met for two hours once a week with Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry trained members of the Diversity Council as the tutors. Post-testing occurred the first week in March.

The SurfWatch Resort hosted the graduation party and provided roast lamb, spinach salad, pasta salad, and cake to the students and tutors. Birgit Koellner, Cara Light, Jeremy Belnap, Jamie Batista, Emily Curry, Laura Dougherty, and Paola Garcia congratulated their students and gave them a pin and certificate for successfully completing the program. This was the second year for the Diversity Council’s ESOL classes. Plans are already in progress for next year’s classes.
