Student Goals

When students enroll at Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry, they are asked to tell us what they want to achieve as they improve their literacy skills. Some of the goals that they list are:

 EDUCATIONAL
   Expand Vocabulary
   Write letters, lists,
   Read signs, books, or religious material
   Fill out forms
   Obtain a GED                           
   Enter another school or training program                                               

EMPLOYMENT
   Get a job  
   Get a better job
   Learn about computers

SOCIETAL/COMMUNITY
   Get U.S. citizenship
   Register to vote or vote for the first time
   Get a driver’s license
   Talk at the post office
   Obtain Library Card 
   Talk to my neighbors
   Talk to my U.S friends
   Talk on the phone
   Understand T.V.
   Read the newspaper
   Open an account at the bank
   Write checks
   Get insurance
   Talk with a lawyer or judge in court
   Talk to the police
   Talk to the doctor or dentist
   Buy medicine
   Call 911 for an emergency
   Read labels in the stores
   Go shopping
   Read the menu/order in a restaurant
   Become more involved in community activities
       

PARENTING/SELF
   Talk to my children
   Read to my children
   Talk to my children’s teachers
   Attend parent/teacher conferences
   Help my child with homework
   Volunteer at my child’s school          

Students can also choose other goals that meet their individual needs.
