Basic literacy programs are designed for adults who want to improve their basic skills so they can find better jobs, better provide for their families, support their children's education, and be more engaged in their communities. Tutoring is one-on-one and confidential and takes place at an LVL learning center or a public place. Students and their tutors meet once or twice a week, for at least one hour a session, at a time and place that are mutually convenient.
Adults who come to LVL have a range of goals and interests. Some want to find work, read the newspaper, balance their checkbooks, manage their personal finances, read to their children, prepare for the GED, or read the Bible. All tutoring builds on what adults already know and focuses on the things they need to know and do to be better workers and members of their families and communities.
Before being placed with a tutor, a prospective student is interviewed and tested to determine his or her current level of skills and to prepare an individual educational plan that is in keeping with his or her needs and personal goals and interests.
