Fundraising

Friends of Literacy:
The "Friends of Literacy" is a group of volunteers who both "fundraise" and "friend-raise" through a variety of special events and programs. They serve as hostesses for our cultivation events; assist the office staff with special projects; and, most significantly, plan and execute special fund raising events.

Friends of Literacy Fall Meeting

The Friends have also played an important role in our "House Parties" over the years by opening their homes for parties to introduce their friends and neighbors to Literacy Volunteers. Going one step further, this successful format has been adapted to reach the business community through our annual agency breakfasts.

We Need Tutors

Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry is looking for people who enjoy teaching people new skills, learning about different cultures, and working with diverse clientele to be trained to tutor adults improving their reading and writing skills or learning to speak, read, and write English.

Each year LVL enrolls over 800 adults in Beaufort County who are looking to improve their lives through literacy. As we approach our peak enrollment in September, we are looking to train volunteer tutors for placement in Hilton Head, Bluffton, or Beaufort in the fall.

A two-session tutor training workshop will be held at the Bluffton Library on Saturday, August 18 from 9:30 to 3:30 p.m. and on Tuesday, August 21 from 5:00 to 7:45 p.m.

In order for you to decide if this is a volunteer opportunity you want to pursue, we are holding a series of 2-hour information sessions. You can pick the one that’s most convenient for you:

Wed., June 6, 5-7 p.m. at our Wexford Learning Center (address below) or Beaufort Learning Center (1403 Prince Street)
Wed., July 11, 5-7 p.m. at Wexford Learning Center
Wed., Aug. 1 5-7 p.m. at Wexford Learning Center
Mon., Aug. 7, 3-5 p.m. Bluffton Library

You’ll be able to sign up for the training after one of the information sessions. One information session and both training sessions are required to be certified as a tutor.

To reserve your place, call 686-6655 on Hilton Head or 525-6658 in Beaufort.

Help change a life through literacy!
