Basic Literacy Programs

Basic literacy programs are designed for adults who want to improve their basic skills so they can find better jobs, better provide for their families, support their children's education, and be more engaged in their communities. Tutoring is one-on-one and confidential and takes place at an LVL learning center or a public place. Students and their tutors meet once or twice a week, for at least one hour a session, at a time and place that are mutually convenient.

Adults who come to LVL have a range of goals and interests. Some want to find work, read the newspaper, balance their checkbooks, manage their personal finances, read to their children, prepare for the GED, or read the Bible. All tutoring builds on what adults already know and focuses on the things they need to know and do to be better workers and members of their families and communities.

Before being placed with a tutor, a prospective student is interviewed and tested to determine his or her current level of skills and to prepare an individual educational plan that is in keeping with his or her needs and personal goals and interests.

English Literacy Programs

English literacy programs (also known as English for Speakers of Other Languages or ESOL programs) are designed for adults whose first language is not English who want to increase their ability to communicate on the job and in the community. LVL offers both small group tutoring led by trained volunteer tutors and classroom instruction provided by teachers. Small groups typically have about five students enrolled whereas classes may have as many as 30 students. Instruction is student-centered and practical. It is set in the context of everyday situations, such as applying for a job, talking to a doctor, registering a child for school.

Groups and classes meet twice a week for two hours each time-either daytime or evenings - at a school, LVL learning center, a church, or another of 13 conveniently locations. Students can choose the programs that best fit their schedules.

Computer-Assisted Instruction (ELLIS)

ELLIS (English Language Learning and Instruction System) is an entertaining interactive computerized program of study that can be used alone or as a supplement to classes. English is used in real-life situations and pronunciation can be practiced and compared to native speakers. Tutors are available on site during lab hours to place and assist students.
